The Department of Tourism has revealed the composition of the six-member panel who will be judging the preliminary competition of Miss Universe on Thursday night, January 26.
The judges are:
- Dayanara Torres—Miss Universe 1993, Puerto Rican former UNICEF ambassador, author, model and actress
- Cynthia Bailey—former model, actress and founder of modeling agency The Bailey Agency
- Rob Goldstone— former journalist, publicist and international marketing director
- Fred Nelson—president/executive producer of the People’s Choice Awards
- Francine LeFrak— social entrepreneur, women’s empowerment activist
- Riyo Mori— Miss Universe 2007, Japanese actress, dancer and model
Asked what she is looking for in the next Miss Universe winner, Torres said that she expects the victor to possess more than just beauty. “I understand it’s a beauty pageant however beauty will not be the only factor. Personality and confidence will blow the judges away every time!”
“I’m looking forward to finding a woman who can handle herself with grace and confidence through her journey with this prestigious title,” she added.
Bailey, meanwhile said that she wanted the next Miss Universe to be a “full package.”
“I am looking for the full package. Someone who embodies confidence, intelligence, personality, style and grace. And of course beauty; inner beauty as well as other beauty,” Bailey said.
Meanwhile, Goldstone stressed the importance of the next winner having a special “X-factor”.
“The new Miss Universe should be someone who uses this incredible platform for the good of humanity. She will not just look confidently beautiful, but have that special X-factor — and I think I’ve already seen a few,” Goldstone said.
Nelson said that the next winner should possess the ABCs namely accomplished, beautiful and charismatic.
“I look for that extra spark, the unique quality which demonstrates her ability to be both the global representative of the organization and a passionate advocate for her causes,” Nelson said.
Riyo Mori, meanwhile, said that the next Miss Universe should be beautiful inside and out.
“She must want to use her voice and platform to give voice to the voiceless. She must be a role model for women and girls and believe she can make a strong impact on the world,” the former beauty queen said.
The Miss Universe preliminary pageant will take place in the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena on Thursday night, January 26, while the final pageant and coronation will happen at the same venue on Monday, January 30 at 8:00 a.m. (Manila time).
This will be the third time the Philippines will host the prestigious pageant after hosting it in 1974 and 1994. (Philippine News Agency)
