While many actors spend hours at the gym or pound the pavements to keep their bodies in shape, singers have that extra task of keeping their voices in fighting form.
For Morissette Amon and Tanya Manalang, discipline is key to it.
“Dapat uminom ng maraming water,” Morissette said in a recent interview with Bulletin Entertainment.
Tanya added they must sing regularly in order to stretch their vocal cords.
“Kasi ’pag tumigil ka sa pagkanta, like ’yung magpapahinga for a week or a month, ’pag kanta mo ulit, mahihirapan ka dahil hindi na-practice ’yung cords mo,” she explained.
The two are one in saying lack of sleep or “puyat” is the devil.
“Iba kasi ang epekto sa boses kapag walang tulog,” Tanya said. “Nakakapaos.”
Time to shine
Even at this point in their young careers, Tanya and Morissette have achieved so many things in their career.
The now 20-year-old Morissette made huge waves when she joined “The Voice Philippines” in 2013. Born and raised in Cebu, she has reaped awards from the PMPC Star Awards, M.O.R Pinoy Music Awards and the National Consumer’s Affairs Foundation’s Seal of Excellence, among others. She is also an internet star, garnering over 38 million views on YouTube for her cover of Little Mix’s “Secret Love Song.”
Morissette said she didn’t expect all these to happen and this soon but she is thankful for the recognition. She hopes to be an international star soon.
“I believe this is my time to shine,” Morissette said, smiling.
Tanya, who started performing at age five, is one of the royalties of Philippine Theater. She has performed in such musical productions as “Godspell,” “The Sound Of Music,” “The King And I,” and in Cameron McKintosh’s 2014 revival of “Miss Saigon” as Kim.
With all her recognitions, Tanya hopes to inspire other people especially the youth.
“Kasi when you are young and you discover these things this early, parang you have more time to get to know yourself more pa in the coming years,” she explained. “And that’s what I want to tell to all the people na nangangarap din.”
Tanya hopes to perform a pop repertoire soon in order to prove her “versatility” as singer.
Two in one
“The West End discovery” Tanya and “The Exceptional” Morissette will share the stage for their first ever major concert together titled “Platinum: World’s Favorite Hit Songs Live!”
The concept of the concert is a challenge to both as “pihikan ang Filipino audience,” Tanya said.
“Mas mahirap sila i-please kasi the Filipino audience has a different kind of ear dahil maraming kumakanta dito,” she added. “So talagang they are very particular, which is good because it challenges me to be better.”
Morissette revealed the concert will test her limits and versatility.
“Kasi hindi ko lang kakantahin ’yung mga songs na I already know but I will also have the chance to sings ’yung mga world hits,” she shared. “But siyempre I’m really blessed with the opportunity to become part of this concert.”
Some might think there will be some sort of showdown, but the two dismissed the notion.
“Absolutely not,” Morissette said. “But we promise na this is a whole different show aside sa mga nagawa na namin before.”
So how does it feel working with each other?
“Cool, enjoy para kaming matagal ng mag-barkada,” Morissette revealed.
Tanya said so, too.
“This is my first time to work with Morissette, and sobra akong nag-e-enjoy kasama siya lalo na kapag rehearsals. I hope mag-reflect sa concert ’yung magandang samahan namin.”
Joining the two as special guest is OPM president, singer-songwriter and actor Ogie Alcasid.
Under the baton of Maestro Rodel Colmenar and over-all direction by Freddie Santos, “Platinum: World’s Favorite Hit Songs Live!” is on May 6, 8 p.m. at the Newport Performing Arts Theater of Resort’s World Manila.
