When Edward Barber auditioned for “Pinoy Big Brother Lucky Season 7,” he had no idea how much it would change his life.
Years prior, Edward was a typical teenage boy growing up in Germany who liked to read and write in his spare time. He had a definite idea of what he wanted to be though later turned his back on it upon making inroads in showbiz.
“I wanted to go to college and study film, literature or psychology. I was planning to help my dad run his business after graduating. But that’s not going to happen now,” he laughed. “Now I’m doing a lot of things that are very different from what I’m used to.”
Edward met Maymay Entrata via “Pinoy Big Brother Lucky Season 7.” Becoming fast friends (perhaps more?), they tickled the fancy of viewers so much that the powers that be deemed it appropriate to pair them as love team.
As of this writing, the tandem known as MayWard has amassed huge following not only here but abroad as well, including Dubai, Hong Kong and the United States.
Their fans spend countless hours on social media, updating each other on the latest happenings on the two. They are also every bit as active offline.
Whenever their idols perform in malls or do other public appearances, the fans show up in droves, screaming at the top of their lungs and waving tarpaulins wildly in the air. It’s because of their enthusiastic and unwavering support that ABS-CBN execs realized the Edward-Maymay tandem has what it takes to be the network’s next big love team.
Edward and Maymay are now filming the Star Cinema rom-com “Loving In Tandem.”
The young actor describes the experience “challenging.”
“Ang hirap kasi ’yung character ko, malayo siya sa kung sino ako, sa totoong Edward. That’s what makes it a challenge for me, to be different from how I usually act, how I usually talk, even how I think and walk. It’s different,” he said.
Still, Edward is keeping his eyes on the prize.
“Alam ko kasi na when we finish it will be the most rewarding thing ever because I believe if there’s no challenge, there’s no reward. Kaya I welcomed the challenge ‘Loving In Tandem’ presented with open arms,” he explained.
Edward showed a lot of potential as actor when filmmaker Rory Quintos entered the “Pinoy Big Brother” house to challenge the housemate’s acting abilities.
After hearing him do a monologue from the teleserye “Pangako Sa’Yo,” Rory enthused, “He’s going to be the next big superstar.”
Edward continues to learn, spending the last several months studying acting under Star Magic Artist Training Head Rahyan Carlos (He and Maymay just passed Star Magic Workshops’ Intro Acting course and will move on to the Advanced Level 1 class).
“Loving In Tandem” is directed by Giselle Andres and it is set to hit theaters later this year.
Meanwhile, Edward is gearing up to join Maymay on the top-rating Kathryn Bernardo-Daniel Padilla soap “La Luna Sangre.”
He also wants to learn how to host a show.
“Ate Toni Gonzaga did a lot of acting and singing before she became a host. I think that’s how I’d like to do it, too. I need more time to grow. I don’t think hosting is my thing at the moment dahil may problem pa ako sa language. Kasi take Robi and Luis Manzano for example, they’re really quick on their feet while hosting. I don’t think I have it in me to do that right now. Maybe later in my career,” he said.
