Julia Barretto, Ronnie Alonte, and Joshua Garcia are on cloud nine these days with their respective careers on the upswing.
Julia has been touted the next big thing since gracing TV screens as a child. However, after gaining prominence via the 2014 melodrama fantasy series “Mirabella,” her ascent was seemingly hampered by a series of controversies
Two years later, Julia is out to redeem herself via “Vince And Kath And James” which hits the big screens nationwide as part of the reinvigorated Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).
“I’m very, very happy, of course,” the young actress said at a recent conference. “Sobrang saya na nakapasok kami sa MMFF. I never ever imagined it possible at this point in my career, never in my wildest dreams.”
This early, some showbiz watchers are betting on the film to hit it big at the tills. Asked for a reaction, Julia retorted, “I’m flattered siyempre. I’m trying to embrace the idea. I’m really hoping and praying din…”
Directed by Theodore Boborol, the film is based on “Vince And Kath,” a popular online series by Jenny Ruth Almocera about lovestruck teens.
In it, Julia plays Kath, a girl torn between two boys, Vince (played by Joshua) and James (Ronnie).
According to Julia, the film is a funny take on love in the time of social media.
“Cute siya, masaya,” she shared. “Dito ’yung character ko is looking for someone who would love her with no filter.”
It’s her first project with Joshua and Ronnie and Julia is happy to report both are “fun” fellows.
“We were able to build a good relationship that led to a very light working atmosphere sa set,” she said.
One step at a time
Is Joshua the next John Lloyd Cruz? Many people think so.
But tell that to the 19-year-old “Pinoy Big Brother” alumni and you’ll have him blushing down to his feet.
“Ang layo pa po, madami pa ako kakainin,” he said. “Pero aminado ako na nakakatuwa, nakakataba ng puso kasi idol ko po si John Lloyd. Marating ko lang ang kahit ¼ ng narating niya, masaya na ako. Siguro one step at a time lang po.”
Like in past performances, many have commended Joshua for his work on “Vince And Kath And James” based on the trailer. Apparently, his unaffected portrayal of a “torpe” is winsome.
“Ginawa ko lang naman po makakaya ko na mapaganda ang pagganap ko bilang si Vince,” he humbly said. “Siguro nakatulong din na masaya ka-trabaho sina Julia at Ronnie…”
Testing the waters
Ronnie, on his part, is simply happy to be part of the film.
“Siyempre kasi po wala naman ako experience sa acting pa talaga. Hanggang workshops pa lang naman ako,” he shared.
Ronnie is known mainly as a member of #Hashtags, the male dance group on noontime variety show “It’s Showtime.”
“Nakakatakot nga nu’ng una kasi siyempre si Julia at si Joshua magaling na talaga sa pag-arte eh ako…’di ba? Nakakatakot pa si Julia noong una ko makilala. Akala ko nga tatarayan ako, ’yun pala mabait siya at jologs din,” he said, laughing.
Both Ronnie and Joshua have a crush on Julia.
“Eh sino ba naman hindi magkaka-crush sa kanya? Ang ganda na, mabait pa,” said Ronnie.
“Ano siya, very down to earth,” added Joshua. “Akala mo sosyal kasi englisera pero mamamangha ka jologs siya. Walang kaarte-arte sa katawan.”
Are they planning to court Julia? Ronnie just laughed out loud.
Joshua unexpectedly fell silent for a moment before blurting, “Wala pa sa ngayon. Trabaho muna. Pero kung makaluwag-luwag, baka (smiles).”
Seemingly amused, Julia interjected, “I like Joshua. I like it that he is very passionate with his craft. I like his drive and I like it na maalaga siya.”
Does that mean he has a chance in winning her heart?
Julia let out a bedimpled smile and purred, “Well…” (With report from Bhenj Agustin)
