On his way

Elmo Magalona continues to develop his artistry and scale the heights of success

Elmo Magalona does not deny that like many Pinoys these days, he is into foreign music.

But while he likes, say, Justin Bieber, Elmo will always have a soft spot for Original Pilipino Music or OPM.

“I like international pop, pero when I get to hear OPM, like ’yung original na talagang atin, iba eh,” he told Bulletin Entertainment in an interview. “You can’t totally explain it but somehow, OPM touches my heart directly.”

Would he say OPM is better than other kinds of music?

“Hindi naman natin pwedeng sabihin na atin lang ang maganda. Pero as Filipinos, we should really focus on OPM.”

Having released several songs in the past (mostly in the pop genre), Elmo admitted he is yet to find the genre that suits him.

“Right now kasi, as a millennial, mas more on pop talaga so ’yun ’yung focus ko. But I’m trying to explore other genres pa para makita ko kung ano ’yung mas bagay sa akin,” he explained.

He is also open to the possibility of reviving the hits of his father, the late Master Rapper Francis Magalona. Elmo already gave Francis’ “Cold Summer Nights” a contemporary treatment, which he describes as “more pop” and borderline dancehall.

“Ang nostalgic nu’ng ni-record ko ’yun. Alam n’yo ’yung ang daming memories na bumabalik talaga,” he enthused.
Just like his father, Elmo can rap.

“Feeling ko mas forte ko talaga siya, pero like what I’ve said, nasa stage pa ako ng ’pag-discover ng music na talagang bagay sa akin,” he said.

As part of his research, Elmo attended the recent BillboardPH interactive exhibit “PlaySound: A BillboardPH Music Trip,” wherein music fans were able to acquaint themselves with the world’s biggest hits past and present.

More projects

On the acting front, everything is going well for Elmo.

The 23-year-old actor-singer, who moved to ABS-CBN in 2015, is working on two films.

“’Yung isa is under Star Cinema, it’s called ‘Bloody Crayons,’ suspense thriller siya na tungkol sa magbabarkada,” he shared.

“The other one naman is under Regal Films, it’s a fantasy rom-com called ‘My Fairy Tail Love Story.’ So I’m really excited because it’s been a while since I made a movie and I can’t wait for both of it to come out.”

How about teleseryes, we asked.

“Nothing that I can mention yet pero meron ng offer,” he disclosed.

Elmo is thankful for all the opportunities coming his way.

“Kung ano ’yung meron ako sa career ko ngayon masasabi ko na I’m super blessed. Kung ano man ’yung mga projects ko, I’m happy na I can call them my own talaga,” he said.

Everything good

Everything good Elmo happily shared that everything is well between him and Janella Salvador’s mother, Jenine Desiderio.

Jenine made headlines posting loaded tweets about a mystery guy linked to her unica hija.

Though she didn’t name the person, many were quick to assume it was Elmo.

“We’re really good, I don’t know where that issue started but okay talaga kami ni Tita, walang problema,” he said.
Elmo shared he recently joined Janella’s family in Singapore.

“It was her brother’s birthday and I’m glad that her mom invited me,” he maintained.

Now that he has established good rapport with Janella’s family, we asked Elmo about the real score between them.
“Love team pa din kami,” he said with a smile.

He added, “We’re good. Masaya kasi lalo pa namin nakikilala ang bawat isa. Pero du’n sa sinasabing romantic relationship talaga, wala pa akong masasabi diyan kasi right now ang focus lang namin is work.”
