The singing Darna

Don’t look now but you just might catch Liza Soberano singing ‘I Believe I Can Fly’ as the heroine

Liza Soberano is pretty but she doesn’t rely just on her looks to shine. Displaying versatility as actress, she can also sing, write songs and play guitar.

“I can’t say na I’m the best singer but when I sing with my friends or relatives, or even during shows, I know that I’m having fun. For me, that’s the important thing kasi eh,” she told members of media in an interview.

She is into pop and R and B. Her favorite song? “All Night” by The Vamps.

The actress is also into rap.

“I know rap is very difficult, it requires a lot of passion,” she admitted. “Like for example Eminem, all of his songs convey a message while some are very personal. I find it tricky but that’s why parang it challenges me also.”
Are there plans for her to record an album, we asked.

“Actually before pa lang po parang nag-plan na mag-a-album ako kaya lang hindi natuloy because I’d been busy with other things,” Liza divulged.

If and when it pushes through, the actress-singer shared she will be hands-on in all aspects of creating her album.
“Kasi it will unleash the other side of me po so I really want it to be special. Hopefully soon, matuloy na po (’yung album),” she said.

Liza plans to take formal voice lessons soon. Given the chance, the actress would love to collaborate with singer KZ Tandingan.

“Pero siyempre it depends po on the song,” she shared. “But I really love to work with Ate KZ kasi super galing niya po talaga.”

As the newest Darna, Liza is also open to singing the theme song of her own movie.

“Pero feeling ko hindi po nila ako kukunin,” Liza said. “Pero kung kukunin naman po nila, bakit naman hindi ’di ba? It will be an honor.”

Liza was recently tapped as celebrity endorser of MegaPro Plus Megasound videoke brand.

Andy Co, MP MegaPro Plus Marketing Corporation proprietor and business partner, believes Liza is the perfect choice as endorser.

“Hindi siya (Liza) professional singer pero na-realize namin na ang MegaPro is not really for professional singers kung hindi para talaga sa mga mahilig kumanta,” she said.

Liza is thankful for the opportunity to endorse the brand as “this means that anyone can really sing talaga.”

She will prove it

It was early this month when Star Cinema officially revealed the 19-year-old will play Darna in an upcoming movie to be helmed by Erik Matti.

People have had mixed reactions about her portraying the iconic superheroine. Liza said she’s determined to prove her naysayers wrong.

“If they don’t think I’m the right one to be Darna, then so be it. I respect that. But I still want to prove to everybody that I am the right one to be Darna – that I can do it, that I’m trying to do my best,” she maintained.

“And of course, there are some good opinions, there are some who don’t agree,” she added. “But, you know, I have to respect everybody’s mind.”

Recently, Liza drew barbs over a sample of her Darna battlecry on “ASAP” with netizens saying she pronounced it the wrong way.

She reasoned, “Ginulat kasi ako ni Ate Toni.”

“As much as possible, gusto ko sana ’yung unang dinig nila (fans) ng pagsigaw ko ng Darna, ’pag ’yung movie na po mismo.

“Actually hindi ko pa po siya napa-practice kasi medyo nahihiya pa po ako at tsaka kasi hindi ko pa po alam kung anong tamang way talaga,” she admitted. “But, if they tell me na ako talaga ’yung sisigaw ng Darna, then I will do it.”

Up and away

Liza is preparing extensively for the role. These include hitting the gym regularly and attending “grace and timing” workshops.

“Siguro sa tingin ko po ’yung pinaka-mahihirapan ako is ’yung sa pagha-harness kasi masakit po talaga siya eh,” she admitted.

If anything, the actress wants to perform all the stunts needed in the movie as much as possible.

“Kasi mahirap din po para sa director and sa camera man kapag may double, pero siyempre po kapag naman threatening (’yung stunts) na talaga, okay lang naman po sa akin na mag-double,” she maintained.

Some say Liza would probably be the very first “conservative Darna” in history based on rumors she is not going to wear the heroine’s classic red and gold two-piece costume.

But the actress maintained, “Anything naman po (ipasuot sa akin willing ako) as long as prepared po ako.”
As for the other cast members of the movie, Liza has no idea.

What if her love team partner Enrique Gil was given a role in it, we teased.

“I would definitely love that,” Liza noted. “And I think a lot of people would be happy also if he became part of the movie.”
