Anthony Taberna may be busy as broadcast journalist but he is able to fulfill his duties as family man.
In an interview with Bulletin Entertainment, Anthony or Ka Tunying shared it’s all about proper time management. “’Pag gusto mo talaga lahat (ng ginagawa mo), magagawan mo ng paraan (ang oras),” he said.
His wife, Rossel Velasco-Taberna, is also busy running Outbox Media Power Corporation, a production agency focused on creative projects, events management, talents and manpower resources, and marketing and advertising solutions.
Husband and wife are both hands-on with Ka Tunying’s Cafe, a bakery brand now with three branches.
So how do their kids figure in the schedule?
“Ah, constant ang communication namin with them,” Anthony said. “Bago matapos ang araw we make sure na nakakapagusap kami. Tinatanong namin kamusta araw nila, kung ano nagpasaya sa kanila o ano pa man.”
He added: “’Pag weekend, nakakalabas naman kami. Kung may long vacation, mag-abroad din kung naka ipon ng ka unti at nakabili ng ticket.”
Anthony and Rossel work closely together in making Ka Tunying’s a success.
“Mula po sa research and development walang nilalagay sa menu na hindi namin nasusubukan,” Rossel maintained.
The bakery was established in Nueva Ecija in 2002 as Anthony’s tribute to his father who is also known as Ka Tunying.
They just celebrated the second year anniversary of their first branch in Manila recently.
The dedication of the two could be seen in how they casually hobnob with their customers.
“We treat them as family,” Rossel related.
Of course, Anthony being a public figure, gets all the attention. Rossel has no problem with that, happy that her husband helps draw more customers than usual.
“Dinarayo talaga nila, lalo na ’yung mga balikbayan. Talagang kasama sa itinerary nila na ’pag umuwi sila ng Pilipinas kailangan ‘pumunta kami sa Ka Tunying’s Cafe,’ so talagang naging haven,” she said.
Anthony believes more than himself, it is the homey feel of their café that draws people.
“Nakadagdag na lang siguro na they see me everyday on TV, they can hear me everyday on radio. Parang nawawalang kapatid nila ako na, ‘’Di ba kasama kita kanina nu’ng gumising ako?’ parang ganu’n.”w
“At tsaka kakaiba kasi rin talaga ’yung ino-offer namin, ’yung traditional Filipino food talaga na feeling mo gawa ng nanay mo dati,” he added.
They’ve also named their recipes strikingly, like their pancit is called Pancit Ni Nanay Benny; they also have a veggie lasagna called, Ka-Love-Asa Lasagna, which has no meat but has lots of kalabasa.
Ka Tunying’s Cafe is now partners with the Bistro Group. They are hoping two more branches will open within the year.
