While most of his contemporaries prefer entering showbiz with a rom-com project, Jerico Estregan is fast-tracking his way to stardom by standing out with a gothic-action movie.
Before his launching movie, he took on supporting roles in the films of his father, actor-politician E.R. Ejercito. These include “Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story,” “El Presidente” and “Magnum Muslim .357.”
Now comes “Amalanhig: The Vampire Chronicles,” about an evil creature based on Visayan mythology, particularly among the Hiligaynon-speaking groups of Panay Island.
In an interview, Jerico said he prepared hard for his role in the film.
“I attended acting workshops, may mga physical training din para anytime ay ready ako sa iba’t-ibang klaseng eksena. Then ang mindset, kailangan din talagang paghandaan ’yon,” he said.
Jerico is into mixed martial arts, parkour, gymnastics, and arnis, to name a few, so he is perfect for action-adventure movies.
“Kailangan tuloy-tuloy ang training para din sa paghahanda sa susunod na mga pelikula,” Jerico pointed out.
Asked to cite the hardest thing he did in filming the movie, Jerico recalled jumping off a waterfall.
“Siguro ’yun ’yung pinakamahirap na part, ’yun ’yung climax ko, kasi napakataas nu’n. Nasugatan lang ako sa tuhod kasi madulas eh sobrang mabato pero overall nag-enjoy naman ako. Sabi nga, you only live once so just do it.”
Playing her leading lady in the film is the comely actress Sanya Lopez.
According to Jerico, Sanya is nice to work with.
“Kasi she’s easy to talk to, she’s down to earth, mabilis siya pakisamahan, and very well rounded. Dahil sa ganu’ng characteristics niya we were able to blend on the set without any pressure or awkwardness,” he said.
Jerico also established a strong relationship with their director Francis “Jun” Posadas.
“Working with him was smooth, everything was clear. Sa set very well coordinated naman kami tapos pagdating pa sa bawat eksena eh inaadvisan niya ako na ‘Okay ganito ang approach, ganito ang tamang kilos, ganito magbitaw ng linya,’” he shared.
The 25-year-old actor believes building good relations with fellow workers is sure way to establish connections in showbiz.
He related audiences should look forward to “Amalanhig: The Vampire Chronicles” as it is totally different from the usual action thriller.
Aside from “Amalanhig: The Vampire Chronicles,” Jerico will also star in two more films: “Alias Ben Tumbling” and “Pancho Villa.”
Jerico wants to explore other film genres in the near future, noting he is keen on working with the likes of Anne Curtis, Yassi Pressman and Erich Gonzales. He also wants to work with his showbiz crush, Bianca Umali.
“Amalanhig: The Vampire Chronicles” opens in theaters nationwide on Sept. 20. (With report from Jojo P. Panaligan)
