New platform for aspiring singers

More Filipinos will get the chance to follow in the footsteps of their singing idols through WISH 107.5’s first-ever online singing competition dubbed WISHcovery.

Interestingly, while TV searches have their mentors and coaches and whatnots, Wish fields “reactors” in the persons of songwriter Jungee Marcelo, Annie Quintos of The CompanY and R&B singers Jay R.

For Quintos, choosing the final 20 contestants was really difficult. It took her two days before coming up with her list.

“I just want to listen first to know if there was something different in their voices, then tsaka ko sila pinapanuod na dapat makikita ko ’yung something na buong-buo ’yung dating sa akin – na there’s truth and sincerity in the performance,” she said of her process.

Quintos likened the participants to fruits of different kinds but all equally delicious.

The voice coach revealed she was surprised to learn there are still many good artists yet to be discovered around the country.

“Sabi ko nga bakit ngayon lang sila lumabas? Sa dami ng mga contests, bakit ngayon eh magagaling naman silang lahat. Nagulat ako na hindi pa pala napipiga ng mga available singing contests natin ang mga talents in this country,” she said.

Though Quintos admitted they were allowed to be candid with their comments, she was careful in sharing her thoughts “kasi as a performer I find it difficult na okrayin sila ng basta-basta ’cause I know what it likes to try to do your best and yet ’di lumalabas ’yung gusto mong mangyari.”

Stretch ’em

Marcelo, on his part, wants to challenge the participants to try other genres.

“Like, we will encourage them to get an old song and re-arrange it to the millennial style. Or maybe get a millennial style and re-arrange it to the old school style,” he said, noting the contestants will only be allowed to do versions of OPM songs.

The singer-songwriter is thankful to be part of the competition, admiring the collaborative process.

“Nagustuhan ko ’yun kasi we were able to feel na part talaga kami. Like they invited is to come and presented to us the criteria and asked our opinions. Ang saya na sinama kami sa process.”

Marcelo believes even though the reactors will have different opinions, in the end they’re all about getting the best as winner.

In terms of their comments and suggestion, he believes it is still the contestants’ decision how they will take it.

“Hindi naman sila forced to do or follow kung ano man exactly ’yung advise namin,” he said. “’Di din naman all the time kami nagre-recommend, minsan magpupuna lang kami.”

Raising awareness

According to the Breakthrough and Milestones Productions International Inc. (BMPI) Vice President for Marketing Jay Eusebio, the contest is meant to “raise awareness for original Filipino music not only in the Philippines but worldwide.”

He revealed their decision to use digital media as platform was meant to help broadcast the competition to a huge range of audiences and fast.

The 20 singers or WISHfuls who were carefully selected are now ready to move up to the “Live Competition” where all performances will be held inside the WISH Bus.

Similar to the WISHclusive performance of different artist inside the bus, the performance of WISHfuls will be done raw.

Exactly 30 % of the score will be derived from “power viewing” or reactions from viewers on YouTube, and 70 % coming from the reactors themselves.

“’Yung sa elimination bale five performance ang u-upload sa YouTube then it will be viewed for the whole week and cut off will be every Friday. Then Saturday mangyayari ’yung elimination based on the power of viewers and score of the reactors. And the same goes on semi-finals up to the final,” he explained.

“We wanted to try and strike a balance between popularity and really having the talent kasi,” Eusebio added.

The 20 finalists are Al Fritz Blanche, Audrey Ranylen Malaiba, Carmela Ariola, Charlene Hernandez, Chris Noel Bernalde, Daniel Briones, Danielle Joshua Supnet, Diana Tabitha Caro, Hacel Bartolome, Jenimay Mabini, JM Bales, John Harvey Magos, Kimberly Baluzo, Kristine Joy Peralta, Louie Anne Culala, Louise Anne Manuel, Lyka Boñol, Princess Sevillena, Vien King, and Zekiah Jane Miller.
