While many associate Matteo Guidicelli with his girlfriend Sarah Geronimo, he is his own person. From car racing, Matteo studied performing arts in college abroad then tried his luck in showbiz.
But it’s not just pure luck. Matteo persevered to be the artist he is today – being an actor and a singer. He starred in several teleseryes, incuding “Dolce Amore,” “Single/Single,” and “Anak Ni Zuma,” among others. And after a year since his eponymous debut album came out, Matteo will reveal more of his side as singer.
Matteo just had a successful concert, dubbed “Hey Matteo” in Cebu and he is bringing it to Manila at the KIA Theater on Nov. 30.
“I want to focus on this muna. I think I found the love with music, especially with music with a band. It’s not about me. It’s about us. I found this love and want to do this more next year. Kumbaga i-tour namin sa school tours tapos sa mga bar tours.
“Scary na nga po ’yung Kia Theater eh. Sabi ko nga sa mga producers ko ‘Music Museum muna tayo.’ Sabi, ‘KIA Theater na.’ I trust my team and the production,” Matteo said at the press conference for the concert.
Holding a concert has always been Matteo’s dream.
“I’m just a boy from Cebu who wants to make a little difference, who wants to make people happy, wants people to love each other,” said Matteo, who is known by the press for being nice and friendly.
As another treat for his fans, his newest 10-track album will be featured in the concert. Matteo hopes people his age, the millennials, will be able to relate to his songs.
“The whole album was inspired by the whole truth. It’s about what I feel. I hope the people, the millennials will also relate to it, if they’re going through the same thing. It’s basically truth,” Matteo said.
“Hey,” “Sa Kanya” and “Akala Ko” are some of the songs in the album.
“There’s a mix of intense songs to really mellow songs. Merong songs for other half, merong edgy. Merong pang-kalma lang, parang lambing lang, and there’s the “Hey yo.” Iba-iba, there’s a big range. It’s an emotional roller coaster kumbaga,” he said.
While he would like to reach out to the millennials, many of whom are into electronic type of music, Matteo said his album has the ’90s to early 2000s vibe.
“It’s inspired by the ’90s, mga pop rock, Kitchie Nadal, Bamboo. I didn’t wanna go for the new electronic, millennial sound. I wanted it raw, organic, kumbaga,” he said.
Sarah, of course, is a big inspiration for Matteo in doing the album and his concert. Matteo and Sarah’s relationship stays strong amid keeping things low key between them.
“I have always wanted this (concert). This has always been my dream, kahit wala pa si Sarah. Sarah is always supportive. She is a big inspiration to do an album. I use this inspiration to fuel, make the album, my band, everything. She’s a big inspiration,” he said.
Some may think his song “Hey” relates to his relationship, but Matteo downplayed it without specifying situations and said the new album is inspired by his experiences. Sarah is known to be very well-protected by her parents Divine and Delfin.
“It’s like I’ve gone through this and I’m sure a lot of people or millennials also go through the same thing. Us millennials, we’re very intense with love. Whenever we do something, we’re very intense and we feel like we know everything, we know what to do and we know what is right. Walang mali sa ginagawa namin,” he said. “And so when we were doing the song, we also have to respect the older generation. The difference is they’re very conservative. The song came out because we cannot do anything we want and we also have to respect the older generation. It’s not just me knocking the door, it’s about I love you and I want to respect both sides.”
Matteo added, “I dont want to put fingers which song is for whoever . Basta this whole album is inspired by real-life events that happened to me, days.”
The Cebuano artist-triathlete denied using Sarah for promotion as he only answers what is asked of him during interviews.
“I’m not gonna be affected because I know the truth in what I’m doing. That’s why we’re not working with each other. Kapag nag-trabaho pa kami, baka sabihin pa na gamit na gamit. I’m not broadcasting Sarah, I’m just answering questions. Some people say na ‘He always talks about Sarah.’ But I’m just answering questions, exchanging conversation,” he said.
Some people still have a lot to say about their relationship, but Matteo chooses to shrug it off as they know what’s true.
“That’s normal. Sarah and I know the truth. It’s Sarah and I in the relationship. Not me and another person. Wala naman silang alam sa totoong nangyayari. We know the truth.”
The concert, which features Morissette Amon, Loonie, and Kiana Valenciano, is produced by Big Bang Productions and Star Music. (With report from Bhenj Agustin)
