Tears poured as family and friends held the funeral ceremony on Dec. 21 for 27-year-old K-pop boy band SHINee’s vocalist Jonghyun who passed away on Dec. 18.
The ceremony started at 8 a.m. (Korea time) and minutes before 9 a.m., the casket bearing Jonghyun’s remains was led out from the Asan Medical Center funeral home in Seoul.
During the funeral procession, SHINee member Minho carried Jonghyun’s name while Jonghyun’s sister carried his picture. The pallbearers were SHINee members Onew, Taemin and Key, and Super Junior’s Leeteuk, Donghae and Eunhyuk.
Jonghyun’s fellow singers at SM Entertainment were there including Girls’ Generation, Red Velvet and other Super Junior members.
Fans were also nearby to bid farewell to Jonghyun who debuted in SHINee in 2008.
Fellow singers and celebrities went to his wake to pay their respect including EXO, BTS, IU, Zico, f(x)’s Victoria, Super Junior M’s Zhou Mi, FT Island, Amber, Sulli, Krystal, Epik High, Wanna One, Highlight, BTOB, Henry, Yoo Jae Suk, Kim Jong Kook, Lee Kwangsoo, Kang Ho Dong, Shin Se Kyung, NU’EST W, Lee Seung Chul, 2PM, Lovelyz.
Jonghyun was found unconscious at about 6:10 p.m. on Dec. 18 in a rented officetel in Cheongdam-dong in Gangnam, Seoul. He was rushed to the Konkuk University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Police concluded that he committed suicide based on burnt charcoal briquettes in a frying pan discovered in his room.
Yonhap News reported that hours before his death, Jonghyun sent text messages to his sister to say “Please let me go. Tell me I did well” and “Final farewell.” A week before he died, Jonghyun held his solo concert “Inspired” in Seoul.
In his suicide note he entrusted to a friend, Jonghyun said he was severely depressed.
“I am broken from the inside. Depression, which was eating me away, has devoured me in the end, and I could not beat it. I hated myself. I held onto my broken memories and shouted at myself to pull it together, but there was no answer. I asked who could take care of me. Only you. I was utterly alone. (Ending one’s life) is easier said than done. Which is why I’ve stayed alive until now,” he wrote, according to KBS World.
