If there’s someone who really feels so lucky this year, it’s stage actor JC (real name: John Carlo Aburgar Santos) who was recently honored at the 30th Aliw Awards for Breakthrough Performance of the Year for the Sugid Productions’ stage presentation “Buwan at Baril.”
From theater and TV, he has made a big jump into mainstream movies by being cast in the Vic Sotto-Dawn Zulueta starrer “Meant To Beh.” It’s JC’s first mainstream movie, and making it doubly significant is the fact that it is an official entry to the 2017 Metro Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).
Said JC at the recent pocket presscon for “Meant To Beh” held at Annabel’s: “Napakasuwerte ko talaga to be cast in ‘Meant to Beh.’ I feel so blessed with all the projects given to me this year. I never thought that I’d be given the chance to work with Bossing Vic, Dawn Zulueta and all the cast in this movie. And to think that I only wanted from the start to do theater acting. I’ve done television work too and now, mainstream movie. Napakasuwerte ko…”
JC added most enthusiastically: “Marami akong natutunan from Bossing Vic and Ms. Dawn. Magaling at disiplinadong actors sila. Dadalhin ko itong karanasan na ito hanggang wakas…”
JC, 29, studied Theater Arts at the University of the Philippines Diliman. And if he feels attachment to “Meant To Beh” for being a family-oriented film, it’s because his father Edwin Santos, was a seaman and his mother, Elizabeth Gutierrez, was an OFW who were most of the time away from home. The Santoses are from Angeles, Pampanga.
From doing stage plays under Dulaang, JC starred in the indie movie “Esprit de Corps” in 2014 and was nominated for Best Actor in Gawad Urian 2015. In 2016, he appeared in “Sakaling Hindi Makarating,” and this year, aside from “Meant to Beh,” JC also was in the cast of “100 Tula Para Kay Stella.”
JC also appeared in various TV shows, among them “Wansapanataym,” “Magpakailanman,” “Ipaglaban Mo,” “Karelasyon,” “Wagas” and “Ladyfish.”
JC hopes his star continues to shine brightly this coming New Year 2018. But in the meantime, he enjoins moviegoers to watch all the entries to MMFF 2017 especially “Meant To Beh.” “You will enjoy our movie,” he promised.
