‘Cebuana’ hit opens opportunities for Karencitta

‘We knew we had a killer record. But we didn’t know it was going to be a hit. That power is with the audience.’

One hit goes a long way for California-based Karencitta whose song “Cebuana” has paved the way for the 22-year old Cebu city native to sign a management deal with Viva Artist Agency recently.

In an interview with Bulletin Entertainment, Karencitta talked about her background, how “Cebuana” broke wide open, and what’s next for her.

“I’ve been taking singing and dancing lessons since I was four years old. Passion ko talaga mag perform sa stage. Dancing, singing, rapping, yun!”

She even joined the “Little Miss Philippines” pageant on “Eat Bulaga.” She didn’t win though she did manage to snag the title “Little Miss Friendship.”

But it was when the family moved to the US.that she realized her calling was much more than a childish phase.

“(My love for performing) developed over time. I took so many lessons to hone my craft. Singing, dancing and even acting,” she said, adding, “You can’t call yourself a singer or a dancer if you’re not doing it for eight to twelve hours daily. And that’s what I did.”

Karencitta also auditioned for “X-Factor,” and later acting roles where she landed parts as an “extra” on “Grey’s Anatomy,” among others.

But she felt truly at home doing music. Karencitta eventually produced her own songs with a partner under their own label, which ultimately released “Cebuana.”

“We knew we had a killer record. But we didn’t know it was going to be a hit. That power is with the audience,” she said.

Sure enough, many people thought her track was good enough that it garnered a million views overnight after it was posted. “Cebuana” now has 3.1 million views since it was released in November of 2017.

This led to doors opening for Karencitta. One of them was the signing with local management company Viva. The company head, Vic del Rosario, announced at the press conference that alongside the distribution of Karencitta’s music in the region, the upcoming concerts (“Revolution” with James Reid and Nadine Lustre), the singer-dancer-businesswoman will also star in upcoming dance-themed movie “Indak” with Yassi Pressman and Ella Cruz.

Asked what factors it took to get her at the cusp of something really big, Karencitta said,” I think it’s a lot of things. But when I saw what a big impact the song had, I realized na, siguro this I what I’m supposed to do. I think I’ve found my purpose.”
