Singer, dancer and actress Maja Salvador ups her value as recording artist now that her latest song “Falling Into You,” a duet with Thai artist Tor+Saksit, has been picked up in Hong Kong, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, New Zealand, and Australia.
The good news was announced at the launch of the single in Manila a few days ago. The collaboration between Maja and Thor was made possible through the team up of BEC-TERO Music Thailand and Ivory Music and Video Philippines.
Written by Tor, “Falling Into You” was recorded at Karma Studios in Bang Saray, south of Pattaya. Maja was flown in for her part, which she said took two days to lay-in perfectly. The studio was used in the past by such artists as Jamiroquai, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, and Jessie J.
Maja is thankful that even though there are a lot of good singers in the country, she got the gig.
“After doing the collaboration, I feel like I’m an international artist also,” she said.
Tor praised the 29-year-old singer for her professionalism. He said Maja’s voice was just what the song required.
Maja said the team liked it that she uses her real voice, meaning “’yung hindi pilit, not singing like a diva, na kung ano ‘yung voice ko, ‘yun lang ‘yung binigay.”
Maja and Tor worked with Victor Lau, a well-known musical producer and composer from Taiwan who has worked with “Meteor Garden’s” Vaness Wu and Cyndi Wang, among others.
The Filipina singer-actress’ vocal coach is Annie Quintos of The CompanY. They consulted with Annie if the song fits the tone of Maja’s voice. The latter revealed they lowered the key a bit.
“Kasi nga they wanted ‘yung swak lang talaga ‘yung boses ko. ‘Yung hindi mukhang nahihirapan ’cause if I’ll use higher notes baka hindi magiging swabe,” Maja explained.
If there is something she learned from the experience, it is “accepting my real voice, my own voice, my own tone.”
“In everything you do, you just need to accept kung ano ‘yung mga kaya mong gawin,” she added.
Tor lauded Maja’s singing abilities.
“I think she’s a very natural singer. She has a lot of experience in acting and it helps a lot in her performance as well because she can control her inner feeling and able to express the emotion,” he said.
Tor admitted he was a bit “afraid” at first when he learned about the collaboration.
“Usually, pretty person or pretty actress has this wall around them. But the moment I came here, she was a totally not like that. She was totally opposite of Ivy Aguas (Maja’s character in now defunct series ‘Wildflower’).
“Like opposite, that she was smiling all the time and she eats everything no matter what you put on the table. ‘Cause girls in Thailand usually say ‘I don’t wanna eat too much because I’m gonna look fat,'” he said.
The two stalked each other on Instagram prior to recording so they would have an idea about each other. They also had a video call during which Tor recalled Maja being already friendly.
Tor plans to invite Maja back to Thailand so she could enjoy his country’s tourist draws.
