K-pop boy band EXO and former 2NE1 member CL will perform at the closing ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics on Feb. 25.
When South Korea hosted its first Summer Olympics 30 years ago in 1988, CL and EXO members were not yet born. Xiumin, the oldest member of EXO, was born in 1990 while CL was born in 1991.
“None of us EXO members existed in 1988. I truly can’t believe that we’re part of the closing ceremony of the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics,” said Suho at a press conference for the closing ceremony, according to Yonhap News.
According to Baekhyun, they “are excited to put on an awesome show this Sunday. When watching past Olympic opening and closing ceremonies, I always thought being on such stage was an incredible feat in and of itself. Emotions are running high knowing that EXO will be on stage.”
He added that they are diligently preparing for their performance, saying, “(In the past) we prepared a lot for year-end award shows, but we knew that we had to prepare more than for the award shows. It’s an honorable occasion but we did go into it feeling the pressure.”
According to CL, the organizing committee approached her three months ago regarding the closing ceremony.
“It is an honor to be invited in a ceremony which the entire world pays attention to, and it is more meaningful since I will be performing in Korea. Please enjoy the performance and look forward to it,” she said, according to the YG Life blog.
K-pop diplomacy has been used at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. At the opening ceremony last Feb. 9, K-pop and other songs were used as background music consisting of Psy’s Gangnam Style, BTS’ “DNA,” Big Bang’s “Fantastic Baby,” Red Velvet’s “Red Flavor,” TWICE’s “Likey” and “Hand in Hand,” the official song of the 1988 Summer Olympics.
It also featured performances by Bolbbalgan4’s Ahn Ji Young, Guckkasten’s Ha Hyun Woo, Jeon In Kwon, Lee Eun Mi, hip-hop dance crew Just Jerk.
Throughout the duration of the Winter Olympics, K-pop artists performed at different shows including NCT 127 and 2PM.
