Jericho Rosales has wanderlust he finds hard to ignore. Like the Beatles’ song, he is often here, there and everywhere.
The actor enjoys riding the waves and the wind in sando and boardshorts. He also likes roughing it up on the road aboard his trusty motorbike. Echo has explored many parts of the country — from Luzon to Mindanao —saying that living in an outdoors-y coastal life gives him unexplainable fulfilment.
“There’s a mystery when it comes to traveling,” he said in an exclusive interview with Bulletin Entertainment. “Alam niyo ‘yung feeling na parang kinakabahan ka kasi you leave home for a bit… ‘yung parang you get to miss home? Pero at the same time, ‘yung pakiramdam na ayaw mo nang umalis sa pinuntahan mo kasi it’s so beautiful there.”
According to Echo, traveling is not just about Instagram-worthy photos, but about meeting new people and understanding the community.
“’Yun ‘yung parang i-e-ex mo ‘yung lugar, tapos sasabihin mo na ‘I’d been there!’ Not to actually brag ha, but ‘yung pag-share mo ng memories. ‘Yung conversation mo with the locals, ‘yung new discoveries mo about the culture. I think that’s what traveling is all about.”
The actor is aware he has an image to maintain so when he travels, he brings his own “kikay kit.” Inside his bag are sunblock, toothbrush, dental floss, moisturizer, lip balm, perfume and deodorant, among others.
“Then there’s my camera. Sa damit, simple lang naman ako eh. Basta meron akong dalang pomade (hair gel) palagi,” he added, laughing.
With summer here, Jericho shared some places to visit as well as valuable pieces of advice on what to do.
With the extreme heat outdoors, he said beach escapades are highly recommended. He thinks provinces in the south are among ideal places to explore.
“Sobrang init ngayon so kailangan talaga mag-hydrate. As early as now, ramdam na talaga ‘yung summer. As a surfer, nakikita namin ‘yung weather change eh,” he disclosed.
“Kung may family (kang kasama), you can explore the south at this time. It’s always north na for the past years like La Union, Siargao. I suggest na go to unexplored beaches in Camarines Sur. Check out Batanes, ‘yung mga places na hindi sikat. Kumbaga ‘wag lang ‘yung sa mga usual. Explore.”
Jericho also finds camping tops at this time.
“Magdala ka ng pick-up, dala ka ng tent, mag-camping lang. That would be fun,” he said.
Though he likes the freedom of riding a motorcycle, Jericho will never do so without protective gear. He has multi-padded jacket, with chest, shoulder, elbow and back armor, plus pants with hip protection.
He said everything comes with “responsibility,” maintaining he is aware of the dangers of riding two-wheeled vehicles.
“We have to be responsible kasi hindi lang tayo ang nasa kalsada,” he said.
He may be adventurous but he is no daredevil. He recalled suffering major cuts while surfing in Siargao.
“I’m into extreme water sports like cliff diving but I know it’s a bit dangerous. Surfing is not that extreme for me because I’m use to it, but kapag hindi ka fully aware (‘dun sa gagawin mo), it’s menacing.”
Echo hopes to do motorcross someday, ditto with free diving.
“I’m not so much of adrenaline junkie, but I’m also not the boring type,” he said. “I’d rather surf a place na hindi ko alam rather than try things na I will put myself in danger. I don’t like stress when it comes to adventure. I believe I do have a responsibility to myself and to the people around me.”
We caught up with Jericho at the Wrangler’s search for True Wanderer 2018 press launch. He has been the denim brand’s ambassador for years now.
Now on it’s 4th year, Wrangler True Wanderer focuses on all kinds of journeys. From taking on the open road to exploring the urban jungle, the denim brand promises to keep people strong and ready for life, everyday, and challenges you to meet each moment like an adventurer.
Jericho says his wife Kim Jones is the best travel buddy on Earth.
“We’re very happy together,” he said.
Asked how they celebrated Valentine’s Day, Jericho disclosed, “Magkahiwalay kasi kami ni Kim nu’n eh. You know we celebrate Valentine’s everyday. We’re great, amazing. We’re always together and work is good but most importantly, family is good and masaya kami.”
Jericho added another feather in his cap by making his commercial directing debut at the launch of the denim brand’s campaign this year.
“Finally an opportunity came up and parang in-embrace ko na,” he said. “Technically this is the fourth time na nag-direct ako. There are few projects na hindi ko na-release. I’m starting slow, starting with projects like this online kung saan mas madami ‘yung freedom, mas maraming creatives ako na nakaka-trabaho.”
Jericho is gearing up for a new teleserye on ABS-CBN.
“This year has just been amazing in terms of new projects that I can collaborate with plus a new TV series, a new soap, tapos I’m working on a movie din pero pagkatapos pa ng soap it’s a great year for me,” he said.
