There are 17 categories in the annual show. These include Song Of The Year, Artist OTY, and the Female, Male Artist and Group OTY plums. Mellow, Rock Video, and Urban Video are genre-specific.

Meanwhile, New Artist, Collaboration, Remake, Media Soundtrack, Music Video Guest Appearance, and Myx Celebrity VJ of the year focus on the personalities and the songs. The coveted Music Video of the year award hails both artist and director.

Mostly an all-Filipino affair, only one segment of the MMA’s focus on foreign pop. The International Video of the year category this year lumps together Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Little Mix and Super Junior.

Completing the categories are the newly added Myx Bandarito Performance and the Myx Magna Award. The latter is the highest honor for an OPM act that is non-music video related.

This year’s nominees are led by James Reid, Jona and Sarah Geronimo. But the presentation of nominees at the press conference focused on the artists that did care to attend the pre-awards event. They include pop artists Jona (nominated four times), Julian Trono and Ella Cruz (for their collaboration on “Tumalon”), newly minted VJ Inigo Pascual (for best artist), Glaiza De Castro (female artist and song OTY) and rapper Shehyee who is nominated along with Keiko Necessario for urban video OTY for their collaboration on her song “Bituin.”

Rock bands, who have been as active as their pop counterparts for the past year, were represented by the likes of Brisom, emo-rock vets Typecast, Mr. Bones and Boneyard Circus, Snakefight, Zsaris and Philia.

The young and new took some of the focus too as singer-songwriter Keiko Necesario, alt-pop streaming darlings Leanne and Naara, “The Voice” alumni Sassa, Volts Vallejo and young retro act IV Of Spades got their nods in major categories and were on hand to react for their first time nominations.

Likewise, newcomer Karencitta, currently in Los Angeles, is nominated for Music Video of the Year for her viral hit “Cebuana.”

The presentation was punctuated by performances from TJ Monterde, Jonalyn, and Sassa among others and the introduction of new VJs. Part fellow-artist recommendation /part popularity contest, fans can vote on myxph.com/myxmusicawards until midnight of May 8. The main Myx Awards Show ceremony will be held at Smart Araneta Coliseum on May 15.
