After they were embroiled in a much-publicized “friendship shakeup” mid last year, Kakai Bautista and Ahron Villena are back to having a healthy working relationship.
The two star together for the first time in the film “Harry Patty” due out May or June. Produced by CineKo Productions, it is under the helm of “Deadma Walking” director Julius Alfonso.
In a recent interview with Bulletin Entertainment, Kakai glowed when she started talking about Ahron and how “okay na kami.”
“Actually last year pa, bago matapos ang taon, nakapag-usap na kami,” she said.
Recall that the two went into an estrangement phase after Ahron denied Kakai’s statements that supposedly suggested they were an item. He even issued this heart-crushing question to the singer-actress: “Naging tayo ba?”
Prior the falling out, the two had been vocal about their closeness which only fanned speculations about the real score between them.
Kakai denied their reconciliation is a career move.
“Sa totoo lang, hindi naman ako papayag kung hindi pa ako okay (sa kanya),” she revealed. “I will definitely not do something with him (kung ganon). Pwede ko isipin na lang ang pera, pero mananaig pa rin ‘yung ayokong makipag-trabaho. Pero dahil okay na ako, sige (pumayag ako).”
Did they clear the air when they met again?
“Hindi na namin ine-elaborate ang mga bagay-bagay. Hindi na namin na-bring up kasi baka mapunta na naman sa away!” she said, laughing.
Kakai declared before that, yes, she fell in love with Ahron. She has since moved on and now thinks they are better off as friends anyway.
“Right now, I’m happy as it is,” she said.
Of course, Kakai has no problem if Ahron falls for someone at this point.
“Keri naman! Pakielam ko ba sa kanya!” she trilled in jest. “Sabi ko nga, ‘Nako, siguraduhin mong mas maganda yan sa akin!” Pero seryoso, buhay naman niya ‘yun eh so go lang.”
What about her? Is she ready to love again?
According to Kakai, she enjoys life alone now, so much so that being loveless is no longer an issue for her. But of course, she is not closing her doors if the right one comes along.
“I’m happy being single. Okay naman muna ako, ayoko na muna ng gulo. Gusto ko steady, kalmado lang muna,” she said. “Gusto ko munang mag-focus sa ibang bagay and not on my heart. Okay naman ang puso ko ngayon kaya hindi ko muna siya gagalawin. Masaya naman ako.”
People know her mainly as a comedian-actress, but there’s more to Kakai than meets the eye.
According to the Dental Diva, she wants to be seen not just a funny girl but a serious singer.
“Sa totoo lang mas gusto ko talaga kumanta kesa umarte,” she said. “Ang pagiging komedyante ko sa TV by accident lang eh kasi ganu’n talaga ako in real life. Parang I don’t see it as a work. Kaya nga, ‘pag may client ako sinasabi ko ‘Oh walang material ha? Gusto ko go with the flow lang.’ So, gusto kong i-take talaga ako ng mga tao bilang singer.”
Coming from humble beginnings, Kakai revealed her dream initially was to become a journalist-lawyer.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be as she got sidetracked by theater work.
“Eto pa nga, nu’ng una hindi ko din naman naisip na magiging singer ako kasi madami akong gustong ibang professional career,” she narrated. “Kaso after graduation, du’n din ako napunta. Basta nag-audition ako sa Gantimpla Theater Foundation hanggang sa nagtuloy-tuloy na.”
Her musical preferences are old song, underground indie, those she describes as “chill lang.” Kakai’s idols are Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, Lea Salonga, Sharon Cuneta, and Donna Cruz.
At her age, Kakai doubles the effort in taking care of her voice.
“Mayroon na kasi akong isang araw na nawalan ako ng boses. So mas disiplinado na ako ngayon, kumbaga kailangan ko i-reserve ‘yun voice by relaxing.”
She plans to release an album hopefully this year. Kakai also likes to write her own book soon. If ever, it will be a compilation of her poems and short stories.
“Ako kasi patuloy kong ine-enhance ‘yung sarili ko. Kapag komedyante ka kasi, minsan nakaka-kahon ka lang, na eto lang ‘yung kaya mong gawin. Gusto kong magulat ang mga tao na, ‘Oh kaya niya pala ‘to.’ So sana, mabigyan ng chance.”
Kakai marks her 15th anniversary in showbiz this year. As part of the celebration, she will hold the “KAKAI XV: The Dental Diva 15th Anniversary Concert.”
Kakai said it is both a tribute to people important to her, and a trip down the memory lane.
“Papasalamatan ko lahat ng tumulong sa akin sa 15 years ko sa industry. Kasi kung hindi dahil sa kanila, wala ako ngayon dito,’ she said.
She proudly shared she’s been very involved in the show, especially in drafting her repertoire. Aside from those genres, Kakai assured that the supporters who have come to love her birit numbers will get more than those.
“Ta-try ko magpaka-millennial through my songs!” she said.
According to Kakai, it is set to become a night of colorful memories, hearty laughs, powerful performances and some, as she jokingly puts, “pa-panty ni Mayor” here and there during her production numbers.
Kakai’s guest performers are Maymay Entrata, “X Factor UK’s” group JBK and some of her Rak of Aegis co-stars like Pepe Herrera, Poppert Bernadas, Jimmy Marquez, Gold Villar, Jet Barun, Paeng Sundayan and others.
Happening on April 6 at the Music Museum, “KAKAI XV: The Dental Diva 15th Anniversary Concert” is produced by FLM Creatives and Productions Inc. It is directed by Frank Lloyd Mamaril with musical direction by Marvin Querido.
