BTS fans ARMYs joined other netizens in raising $1 million for the #RoarForChange campaign by Star Wars: Force for Change, a charity initiative by Lucasfilm and Disney, for UNICEF.
The campaign called fans to share their version of Chewbacca’s roar and for every post, like or share on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter that included the hashtag #RoarForChange from May 3 to 25, Star Wars: Force for Change will donate $1 to UNICEF USA for up to a maximum of $1 million.
Funds collected will be used by UNICEF USA to provide ready-to-use therapeutic food packets for children around the world who are suffering from malnutrition.
“Every year, May 4th has seen fans across the globe become Forces for Change and rally around good causes. This year, as part of the countdown to the launch of Solo: A Star Wars Story, we’re giving them a fun way to support UNICEF while celebrating Han’s legendary sidekick Chewbacca, and his iconic roar, which is almost as recognizable as the Wookiee warrior himself,” said Paul Gainer, head of Disney Consumer Products Commercialization, according to the Force for Change website.
On May 5, George Pennacchio, entertainment reporter for ABC7 Eyewitness News, called on BTS ARMYs to help in raising funds for the campaign.
“Okay, #BTSArmy, show your power for charity! Between now & 5/25/18, for every like, share or public post on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram where we see this hashtag – #RoarForChange – Force For Change U.S. will donate a dollar to @UNICEFUSA. #MayThe4thBeWithYou @BTS_ARMY,” he tweeted.
BTS fans responded and in just a few hours, the goal of $1 million was completed. The hashtag also topped the worldwide trending topics on Twitter.
“Star Wars” acknowledged the initiative by BTS fans and other people around the world.
“Thanks to fans from around the world & the #BTSARMY, we reached our maximum donation goal of $1M. Funds unlocked through this campaign will help @UNICEF provide food packets to children suffering from malnutrition. Happy #StarWarsDay!,” it posted on Twitter.
The Force for Change website posted, “Thank you for participating in the #RoarForChange challenge! In a little over 24 hours, by posting, liking, and sharing your Wookiee roars on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, you helped Star Wars: Force for Change U.S. donate $1,000,000 to UNICEF USA to support children around the world.”
BTS have their own UNICEF project called “Love Myself,” which was launched last November. The campaign aims to raise funds for #ENDviolence, UNICEF’s global campaign to protect children and teens from violence.
The film “Solo: A Star Wars Story” will be released in the US on May 25.
