The beauty of the oldest city and first capital of the Philippines, Cebu City, is featured on the GMA series “Inday Will Always Love You” that start airing May 21.
Lead cast Barbie Forteza, Derrick Monasterio, Kim Rodriguez, and Juancho Trivino said the setting is as essential as the characters they play.
During their first shoot in Cebu that lasted two weeks, they were able to visit numerous top destinations as Bantayan Island.
They also showcased the beauty of Sirao Flower Garden dubbed the mini-Amsterdam of Cebu, as well as historical and popular places like Temple of Leah, Magellan’s Cross and 10,000 Roses Café.
Derrick said Cebu is perfect site as it still has many “unexplored” places.
“It’s very underrated para sa akin, kasi ang daming pwedeng makita sa Cebu,” he explained. “Ako, ngayon lang ako nakapunta ng Bantayan pero mas maganda pa siya sa ibang beaches na napupuntahan ko.”
“So dito masasabi ng audience na ‘Ay may ganito pala sa Cebu.’ Habang nanunuod sila ng ‘Inday Will Always Love You’ makikita nila kung gaano kaganda ’yung Cebu,” Kim added.
While it was Barbie, Derrick and Kim’s first time to visit Cebu, Juancho lived there for couple of years in his younger years.
Juancho, Kim and Derrick were required to speak in Visayan, which they found challenging.
“Minsan, sobrang hirap kasi on the spot nila sinasabi ’yung linya, as in du’n sa mismong set,” Kim divulged. “Mahirap din talaga lalo na kung hindi mo naman kinalakihan ’yung ganu’ng dialect tapos sasabayan mo pa ng emosyon.”
Derrick admitted it was tough but thankfully, he has Visayan friends whom he could asked to translate the phrases for him.
On the show, Juancho gets to sing a full song in Cebuano. The recording took two and half hours to finish.
“Kasi ’yung pronunciation kapag nasabi mo ng iba, ’yung salita ay iba na din ’yung meaning kaya medyo mahirap talaga,” he noted.
Cats and dogs
Aside from Cebu being featured on the series, the cast noted viewers should look forward to the catfight between Barbie and Kim.
“Hindi lang po sabunot ang inaabot ni Barbie sa akin,” Kim shared when asked how warfreak her character is.
“Kung ano-ano po ’yung tinatapon ko sa kanya kaya pagkatapos sabi ko ‘Uy sorry huh, sorry talaga,’” she recalled.
There was a time Kim got carried away by her character that she forgot what the director said.
“Sabi ni Direk ‘Oh ’wag mong ihagis itong lamp.’ Nu’ng nag-take na parang nawala sa isip ko buti na lang nasalo ni Derrick ’yung lamp,” she revealed. “Kasi minsan hindi maiwasan madala kasi hanggang hindi sila nagka-cut hindi kami titigil.”
Although some scenes look too real for comfort, Barbie noted they never really hurt each other and everything is just acting.
“Inday Will Always Love You” marks the comeback of the DerBie love team on TV after the success of their reunion film “Almost A Love Story” shown last month.
Despite that Derrick and Barbie last worked together in 2014 for the series “The Half Sisters,” the actress is grateful their bond remains tight.
“Surprisingly, kahit matagal kaming hindi nagka-work together ay walang pinagbago si Derrick in terms of taking care of his leading lady. Maalaga pa rin siya, siya ’yung nanggigising, nagchi-cheer up ’pag madaling araw na,” she shared.
Barbie noted Derrick has matured as an actor.
“Talagang dine-design niya ’yung character niya na iba-iba palagi per project,” she explained.
Meanwhile, it is also Barbie’s opportunity to work again with veteran actors Manilyn Reynes and Tina Paner, after “Meant To Be” last year.
Other stars in the “Inday” cast are Ricky Davao, Gladys Reyes, Super Tekla, Kimpoy Feliciano, and Nova Villa.
