Joyce Bernal will direct President Rodrigo Duterte’s third State of the Nation Address (SONA), Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar confirmed Thursday.
Bernal is the second director to handle the important event after award-winning Brillante Mendoza, who directed the previous two SONAs under President Duterte’s administration.
Andanar said it was actor Robin Padilla who suggested that Bernal direct this year’s edition.
“And the President approved it,” the Palace official said.
Bernal is known for directing comedy-drama films such as the “Kimmy Dora” series, “The Super Parental Guardians,” and “Don’t Give Up On Us,” among others.
She also directed some series on TV including the remake of South Korean series “My Love From The Star,” “That’s My Amboy,” “Marimar,” and “Dyesebel.” Bernal won Best Director in the 2013 Metro Manila Film Festival for her action film “10,000 Hours.”
President Duterte will deliver his third SONA at the Batasang Pambansa in Quezon City on July 23, the opening of the third and last regular session of the 17th Congress.
