K-pop boy band BTS bagged their first nomination at the 2018 American Music Awards (AMAs), which will be held on Oct. 9 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California.
The idol group got nominated for Favorite Social Artist alongside Cardi B, Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato and Shawn Mendes.
This is the first time that the AMAs added the favorite social artist category.
According to the AMAs, this year’s nominees were selected based on key fan interactions from Sept. 15, 2017 to Aug. 9, 2018 and all AMAs winners are voted by fans.
A number of BTS fans were disappointed that the group’s “IDOL” and “Fake Love” music videos did not get nominated for Favorite Music Video.
This year’s nominees for the category are Camila Cabello ft. Young Thug’s “Havana,” Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow (Money Moves)” and Drake “God’s Plan.”
“IDOL” is not eligible as it was released on Aug. 24, past the nomination eligibility period. The music video made YouTube history by garnering over 45 million views in the first 24 hours. “Fake Love” is eligible as it was released on May 18.
Last November, BTS performed “DNA” at the 2017 AMAs.
Voting in all categories has started except for Favorite Social Artist, New Artist of the Year and Collaboration of the Year, which will commence on Sept. 24.
For the three categories, fan can vote 100 times a day for each award per voting platform at https://www.billboard.com/amas or “posting a tweet on Twitter that includes the nominee’s name or Twitter handle, the category name and #AMAs within the tweet.”
In 2012, Korean rapper Psy won the New Media Award at the AMAs for his viral hit “Gangnam Style.”
