With his to-die-for-bod and oozing sex appeal, Marco Gumabao has earned a sex symbol tag, something that does not bother him.
“It’s okay with me. This is a product of our hard work, of our workout and diet. I am proud to show the hard work I did on my body,” says he.
Marco plays a bastard in the latest ABS-CBN soap “Los Bastardos” where he is joined by equally hunky actors like Jake Cuenca, Diego Loyzaga, Albie Casiño and Joshua Colet.
The young star reveals he works out “as much as possible.”
“If I don’t have work, I make sure I do my workout. If I can do it every day, then I’d do it everyday. But mostly, I make up for it by observing my diet.”
As one of the hunks in the series, Marco welcomes doing sexy scenes and donning skimpy trunks so long as “it’s needed for the scene.”
He shares that while his character isn’t really into showing skin, he had a “really intense” scene with Jane Oineza.
“We did kissing scenes for our first few scenes together. It’s good that I know Jane from way back. In fact, when I started in showbiz, I met her during a workshop. So, for me, it wasn’t hard to do the scene because I know her so well. We were just laughing at it.”
So, more such scenes soon?
“We’ll cross the river when we get there,” he said. “Me and Jane, we always talk before the scene. I always ask her, ‘Is it okay with you if I’ll do this?’ It’s easy to work with Jane because she’s, like, ‘Go lang.’ She doesn’t have hesitation, it’s pure work.”
Playing Matteo is challenging for Marco because he is the exact opposite in real life.
“Matteo is very, very hardheaded because he was groomed by his stepdad (played by Ronaldo Valdez). The whole second week, you will just see his temper. Most of his scenes showed his anger for the workers. He fumes at the slightest mistake of his workers.
“Even to his mom, he is like that. He doesn’t give his mom importance. It’s very different for me because I am close to my mom.”
With four other hunky personalities on the show, Marco knows there is competition among them, whether imagined or real.
“That’s what we’ve talked about. It’s healthy competition. We think of it as motivation for us to improve. We cannot allow ourselves to be left out. We cannot let go of our workout and diet, otherwise, we’ll be left out. I know the other four guys are working hard to improve their bodies so I have to do double,” he said.
He later said: “Before, when I was young, I was into Muay Thai. My cardio activity is baskeball but my workouot routine is bodybuilding. I enrolled in a 24-hour gym because after taping, I hit the gym for a workout, three to five times in a week.”
Marco brings to taping his own diet food – chicken breast, kamote and vegetables.
Well, this is the first time Marco is featured as leading star on a soap opera, so, of course, he’s giving it all he’s got.
“It is really timing,” he said of getting the break. “It just happened that I modeled first for Bench and that I prioritized beefing up my body. And because of that, it led to another thing, to another blessing, to eventually be one of the lead stars here.”
