Falling in love with a good friend of the opposite sex is the central theme of Maja Salvador and Zanjoe Marudo’s film “To Love Some Buddy.”
Produced by Black Sheep and Star Cinema, the story is about friends, Faith and Julius, who eventually start dating each other.
“This is not a fairy tale,” Maja said in a recent interview. “For the past years, we are so used to watching ‘happily-ever-after’ films. We want this one to be different. We will let the audience see what could happen when you fall in love with your best friend.”
Faith always runs to her best friend, as all girls do, every time she has a problem especially when it’s about a guy. Despite being busy (sometimes with another girl), Julius (Zanjoe) still makes time for his best friend. They inevitably get asked by other people: “Best friends lang ba talaga kayo?”
Moments later, he starts seeing Faith in a different way and tries to convince her to start dating. “Paano kung hindi mag-work?” Faith asks, to which Julius answers: “Try lang natin.”
Relating to their personal lives, Zanjoe and Maja both said they may or may not fall for a friend as it all “depends on the situation.”
Maja, who considers Rayver Cruz and Enchong Dee his closest guy friends, explained: “I don’t see myself having a relationship with them. Like Enchong, I admit that I got a crush on him before, but I think it will not go on to the next level.”
Zanjoe, on his part, shared his character Julius decided to date his best friend in order to protect her from other guys.
“It’s like, ‘Hey, let’s be together,’ but at the same time, we should maintain the same ‘relationship’ we have as friends. Same dynamics, same formula,” he explained.
It is the first time the two have been paired although they have long express desire to work with each other.
“I am comfortable working with Maja. The challenge here was to really portray a good friendship. Me and Maja know each other but were not really close before,” was how Zanjoe put it.
Can best friends who become lovers regain friendship should they break up?
“Maybe? It all depends. Given the chance, why not,” Maja said.
Directed by Jason Paul Laxamana, “To Love Some Buddy” opens in cinemas today.
