“Signature walk” has always been an important factor in pageants.
Having one makes a candidate stand out in the eyes of the judges and her audience as it highlights posture and confidence on stage.
Filipina beauty queens usually have a namesake for their titular pasarelas, a Spanish term for runway.
If Miss Universe 2010 4th runner-up Venus Raj had her “Pilapil walk,” Miss Universe 2011 3rd runner-up Shamcey Supsup did the “Tsunami walk.” Then there’s “Cobra walk” for Miss Universe 2012 1st runner-up Janine Tugonon, “Arriba walk” for Miss Universe 2013 3rd runner-up Ariella Arida, and “Camel Walk” for Miss Universe-Philippines 2014 MJ Lastimosa.
Of course, who could forget Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach’s “Tanim-bala walk?” How about “Alta walk” for Miss Universe-Philippines 2016 Maxine Medina, and “Infinity walk” for Miss Universe-Philippines 2017 Rachel Peters?
Now that Miss Universe season is right around the corner, it’s time to have a sneak peek at Catriona Gray’s – our country’s representative to the prestigious pageant this year – signature (and hopefully, winning) walk.
In a video released by dancer and choreographer Carlos Buendia Jr, Catriona is seen practicing a walk they call, “Lava walk.” It was captioned, “Glide, Sway, Pivot, and Erupt!”
The namesake is said to refer to the queen’s Bicolano roots. It symbolizes the dainty Daragang Magayon and her affinity with the majestic Mayon volcano. (Show your support to Catriona by using the hashtag #LavaWalk on social media)
A little over a week before Catriona flies to Thailand for the competition, she has been pulling out all the stops in preparations.
One of the highly anticipated segments is the display of the national costumes. Several of the 94 candidates have already revealed on social media what will they wear.
Although the Philippines doesn’t usually reveal her representative’s national costume, one thing pageant fans know is that Catriona’s will be created by Jearson Demavivas. Based on Catriona’s Instagram stories, she teased she will be wearing something that is massive. Her evening gown is said to be created by Mak Tumang.
Bulletin Entertainment caught up recently with Iowani Unpingco at Hair Asia 2018 headed by Evelyn Cruz at World Trade Center. Iowani was Catriona’s makeup stylist in their recent World AIDS Day shoot.
According to him, the beauty queen has a “natural beauty” that it makes him easy to work on.
“Actually, this is the fastest makeup session we did. I really didn’t have a hard time styling her,” he said at the time of interview, adding “She really has good skin.”
He believes Catriona’s asset is her eyes. Iowani thinks she should wear sexy, wavy hairstyle come Miss Universe pageant.
On contrary, renowned Filipino fashion designer Renee Salud believes a ponytail hairstyle will best complement Catriona, reiterating it would allow her look “dainty.”
“Catriona has a nice forehead. I think she will look cleaner when she dons a ponytail hairstyle,” he said.
So, whose suggestion is it going to be?
