Miss Universe Vietnam 2018 H’Hen Niê’s inspiring story of rising above captured the hearts of netizens.
From being a household helper to Miss Universe contestant, Nie was named Miss Vietnam on January 6, 2018.
The 26-year-old model came from the Ede or Rade ethnic minority group.
“I was born in a family with six brothers and sisters. My mother and father are both farmers,” Nie said in her VTR.
As part of tradition, her parents asked Nie to get married at the age of 14 but she refused the practice and decided to study Business Finance at the College of Foreign Economic Relations in Ho Chi Minh City and live in Saigon.
Nie also stated that she is the first person from an ethic group to be Miss Universe Vietnam.
“The ethic minority that I am from makes up approximately 5% of Vietnam’s population,” she said.
According to @missuniversevietnam’s Instagram post, Nie has “tried her hands in several jobs such as a maid, tutor, leaflet deliverer, and model to help pay for her studies and life in the city.”
“Growing up as an ethnic minority in Vietnam, I have seen firsthand that education is the only way to break the cycle of poverty,” Nie wrote on her official Instagram account.
“I want children everywhere to flourish, dream big and have the resilience to overcome obstacles,” she added.
Nie conquered the world of modelling in 2014 and joined Vietnam’s Next Top Model in 2015.
She then entered Miss Universe Vietnam pageant after two years.
The Vietnam bet finished Top 5 during the Miss Universe 2018 pageant.
“From nothing, here I am. I can do it so you can do it too!” Nie said.
