With New Year’s Day festivities over, many Filipinos look forward to Jan. 9, the day the Black Nazarene devotees flock to Quiapo for the “Traslacion.”
The Spanish term refers to the “passage” or “movement” of the Black Nazarene in belief that the image has miraculous powers.
The Black Nazarene has celebrities who take time off busy schedules to observe the Catholic tradition.
“FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano” star Coco Martin has been a devotee of the Black Nazarene even before he joined show business. It was in 2007 when he first got the chance to touch the blessed image while shooting the indie film “Tirador.”
Last year, he went to Quirino Granstand early in the morning, where he had some quiet time and touched the Black Nazarene once again.
The year 2018 was the fourth time singer-actress Angeline Quinto joined the tradition. The staunch Black Nazarene-devotee even braved the crowd as she took the risk of climbing up the “andas” to touch the holy image of Christ and safely got off thanks to the help of “hijos” who assisted the procession.
A devotee of the Black Nazarene for 30 years now, newscaster Noli de Castro makes sure to join the Traslacion no matter what happens.
Bayani Agbayani became a devotee because of his mother Mila.
Christopher de Leon had also been spotted scrambling on his feet to reach the top of the andas, believing his family’s success came from the Black Nazarene’s miracle.
Hashtag member McCoy de Leon took a break from his hectic schedule last year and joined the procession.
On Instagram, he shared his experience of climbing up and kissing the cross of the Black Nazarene.
“Dalawang halik sa krus mo at nahawakan ko pa ang kamay mo. Ito ay isa sa pinaka kakaibang nagawa ko sa buong buhay ko. Natulala lang ako nung nasa taas ako habang naka tingin lang sayo at hindi na inda lahat ng sakit sa katawan bago sumampa. Maraming salamat lahat salamat dahil hinayaan mo kong makalapit sayo Poong Nazareno. Mahal ka po namin,” he wrote.
He thanked the people from Wagas Batang Ibarra who helped him, his friends, and his dad climb the andas.
Couple Melai Cantiveros and Jason Francisco are among those who attended the mass at Quirino Grandstand before the procession started.
