He has the looks, talent and charisma, and he’s primed for solo stardom.
Young K-pop star Park Ji Hoon is gearing up for his solo debut with the album “O’Clock” for release March 26.
But before this, the 19-year-old singer and actor, who became known as the “wink boy” on the survival audition TV show “Produce 101” season 2 and member of boy band Wanna One, visited the Philippines and held his 2019 Asia Fan Meeting in Manila “First Edition” on March 15 at Araneta Coliseum.
This was his first solo fan meeting in the country and Park Ji Hoon made sure that it would be a very memorable event for his Pinoy May fans. May is the name of his official fan club.
“I really love Filipino May fans and I already prepared gifts only for them,” he said at a press conference at Novotel Manila Araneta Center hours before his fan meeting took place.
After opening the show with “Shape Of You” by Ed Sheeran, Park Ji Hoon greeted thousands of fans at the coliseum, saying, “Mabuhay Filipino May. Itatatak ko kayo sa puso ko. Thank you for welcoming me with such hot passion. I’m so glad to be here to see you guys.”
The fan meeting became a prelude and showcase of Park Ji Hoon’s talent in music. He also performed other songs as “Hide And Seek,” “Press Your Number,” “I Wanna Have,” “11,” and “Young 20,” a track produced by fellow Wanna One member Lee Daehwi with lyrics co-written by Park Ji Hoon.
He started his showbiz career as a child actor, appearing in dramas such as “Jumong” and “Kimchi Cheese Smile.”
But he said that when he saw K-pop singers perform, it influenced him to focus on music, saying, “I saw idols on stage. When I watched them perform, that inspired me to be a singer.”
The fan meeting, hosted by Kring Elenzano-Kim, had different segments that allowed Park Ji Hoon to interact with fans.
In the Study Edition, Park Ji Hoon asked questions to which fans replied and in the May Edition “Hello” segment, two fans were selected and got the chance to talk with him and have a “cup phone date.”
In the DIY (Do It Yourself) corner, he decorated two eco-bags with animal patches, signed them and gave it to lucky fans. The first fan also got a candy bouquet from him.
During the Limited Edition corner, he played a claw machine, or claw crane, to get plush toys that he gave to fans.
“I received a lot of pink rabbit stuffed toys. Since I received them, I wanna give back (to fans),” he said.
After the segment, a fan video, produced by Wink Moms Philippines, was shown that highlighted Park Ji Hoon’s various charms. Fans also raised banners which read “All Mays by your side.”
“As expected, this is the Filipino Mays. Salamat po,” he said.
From Wanna One to solo artist
After Wanna One ended last December, Park Ji Hoon has been preparing for his solo debut as a singer.
“It’s hard to go solo because I was in a group before. But now I want to be stronger. I will try my best to gain achievements as a solo artist. I feel burdened because I’m always by myself but with the support of fans, I’m trying my best,” he said.
He added that as a solo artist, his goal is “to be with my fans and communicate with them through fan meetings, concerts, and other events.”
Despite that Wanna One is no more, the members still communicate with one another.
“We have a group chat so we are cheering for each other. Please also support other Wanna One members,” he urged.
For his upcoming debut album, headlined by the carrier single “L.O.V.E.,” he shot the music video in Prague.
“I went to Prague for my music video. I hope you can watch and support my music video because it’s really beautiful like the places where we shot it,” he said.
Aside from singing, fans might also see Park Ji Hoon act again.
“Actor’s skills are really special for me. I want to try every role that fits me,” he replied to a question about characters that he wants to play.
He promised fans that he “will try my best for my career. Please support and cheer me.”
At the end of the fan meeting, Park Ji Hoon thanked the audience, saying that he’s “so happy to see my Filipino Mays again.”
“I’m glad that we were able to make new memories together. I will try my best so that we can meet more often so please look forward to it. Mahal ko kayo, Filipino Mays. You guys are really my flowers. ’Till the day we meet again, please wait for it,” he said.
