The star of “Oh My Venus” and “Master’s Sun,” So Ji Sub, set the hearts of his Filipino fans aflutter by spending time with them over the weekend.
“I know it’s my first time to see my Filipino fans. Because of this, I’m excited and nervous at the same time. I hope we make good memories tonight,” the 41-year-old actor and singer told the crowd at his Asia Tour “Hello” Manila fan meeting held at the New Frontier Theater.
The previous stops of the tour were Taipei, China, Bangkok, Jakarta, and Hong Kong.
So Ji Sub explained the name of his fan meet.
“So what people say whenever, wherever everyday is a greeting. So with that nice greeting, I want to continue our good relationship that’s why I named it ‘Hello,’” he said.
After starting the show with the song “Can’t Smile Without You,” So Ji Sub answered questions about his travels, fashion, and food.
He revealed that he visited the country before, saying, “When I was in my early 20s, I came here to the Philippines to shoot my music video. I haven’t been here recently. Next time when I come back, I want to enjoy the sun and do some tanning. Next time, I’ll try to go to Cebu.”
Whenever he travels abroad, So Ji Sub tries local food and when he arrived in Manila on March 15, he “ate some egg fried rice. It was like samgyupsal (grilled pork belly).”
“I really try to eat each country’s food. Whenever I’m in Korea, I always eat Korean food so when I’m out, I try not to eat it. I like meat the best but I usually like everything.”
So Ji Sub is a well-known actor, starring in dramas such as “What Happened In Bali,” “Delicious Proposal,” “Cain And Abel,” and “My Secret Terrius.” His film credits include “Rough Cut,” “A Company Man,” “The Battleship Island,” and “Be With You.”
He made his acting debut in 1996 and, to date, he has done 10 movies and 25 dramas.
It was through “My Secret Terrius” that he won his first drama daesang, or grand prize, at the MBC Drama Awards last December. He played the role of an agent of the National Intelligence Service (NIS).
Filming the drama with children became a challenge, the star admitted.
“There were a lot of hard parts while shooting but most of them it was shooting with the children. That’s when I realized how great and amazing parents are. The fact that you have to play with the children and care for them, that wasn’t as easy as expected,” he said.
At the fan meeting, hosted by Kring Elenzano-Kim, So Ji Sub interacted with fans including one segment where they asked him questions. He also donned wings and a flower crown as penalties during a game.
One lucky fan from California, who attended her first fan meeting, was chosen in a raffle to win one-of-a-kind polaroid shots of So Ji Sub and a necklace, which was specially made for the tour.
“You can’t buy this anywhere,” said the actor, who personally put the necklace on her.
So Ji Sub also showed his talent in singing. One highlight is So Ji Sub and group Soul Dive covering iKON’s “Love Scenario.” They also performed other songs such as “Cola Bottle Baby” and “Boy Go.”
Completing the tour in six countries and regions is memorable for So Ji Sub.
“As I’m ending the tour, I think that this moment when I’m with my fans is the happiest. I know when I go back (to Korea), all these feelings will come rushing to me,” he said.
When the fan meeting drew to a close, So Ji Sub expressed his appreciation to the fans.
“I’m so happy that we were able to do it together. Thank you for giving me such energy. See you again,” he said.
So Ji Sub’s Asia Tour “Hello” Manila was presented by 51K, Live Nation Korea, and Pulp Live World.
