Before becoming a popular stand-up comedian in the late ’90s, Rey Kilay was working behind the camera. (Ay, ayaw pakita?!?)

“Undergrad ako ng kursong Respiratory Therapy sa Emilio Aguinaldo College, kasi kinailangan kong magwork. Una kong work sa isang money trading company tapos may friend ako sabi mag-apply ako sa ‘Chibugan Na’ noontime show sa RPN-9. Natanggap ako tapos nu’ng nawala ’yung show, napunta ako sa ABS-CBN, sa ‘Sang Linggo NAPO Sila,’ hanggang nabigyan ako ng chance na maging writer sa iba’t-ibang shows,” Rey shared. (Ikaw na ang Raket Diva!)

A regular Saturday night out changed his career.

“Nasa comedy bar kami na The Library sa Malate, 1997 ’yun. They asked me to sing and they liked me kasi daw sumasagot ako sa interview portion with Philip Lazaro and Arnel Tamayo na host that time. Then Mamu Andrew de Real offered me para maging host talent ng venue.” (Waiting na rin ako sa offers po)

Rey never imagined he would be in this industry as “dream ko talaga maging designer pero hindi natuloy kasi bagsak ako sa entrance exam sa art school,” he said laughing. “Hindi yata ako matalino, haha!” (Baka kulang pa sa arte!)

Being a stand-up comedian and TV writer opened doors for him to be an on-cam talent. (Sakin kaya kailan magbubukas?!)

“Naging break as talent ’yung romance-comedy na ‘Labs Ko Si Babes’ with Marvin Agustin and Jolina Magdangal. After that ay ni-launch ’yung ‘Pangako Sa’Yo’ nina Jericho Rosales at Kristine Hermosa. Sidekick ako ni Kristine, name ng character ko Cookie,” Rey said. (Balita ko muntik ka pa nga maging partner ni Echo!)

In 2005, Rey left for the US to work.

“I wanted to try working in America kasi dollars ang bayad (laughs). Dapat one year lang pero nag-enjoy ako kaya nag tuloy-tuloy na. My dad is a war U.S. veteran and his dream is to come to America. But he passed away nu’ng 2004 kaya sabi ko ako nalang ang magtutuloy ng dream n’ya…” (Baka naman… pwede i-share ang dollars!)

He stayed in San Francisco for 13 years where he worked as karaoke master and host of concerts and corporate shows. He is now based in Las Vegas, doing not only his regular gigs but he is also employed at a call center. He will hold his birthday show at the Jackpot Bar and Grill on Decatur Boulevard on April 26.

At syempre Inggles dapat ang chika kasi minsan mixed audience,” Rey said (Ay, medyo suplada-supladahan ’yung may English spiels!)

Rey hopes to stage a comeback in local showbiz someday.

“Dream project ko ay magka-movie na ako ang lead star. Dream ’di ba?! (laughs) Actually, kahit sidekick lang ng bida, pwede na. Sana rin magka-album ako kasi I sing naman.” (Ako, kahit sidekick ng sidekick, game na!)

Asked what he misses most in Manila, he said: “Lalaki!” (Ay, marami pong available! May ganon?!)
