The debut concert in Manila of K-pop boy band Stray Kids was a rousing success that saw them command thousands of fans at Araneta Coliseum.
Members Bang Chan, Hyunjin, Woojin, Lee Know, Changbin, Han, Felix, Seungmin and I.N were amazed by the big turnout at their Unveil Tour “I Am …”
“We have a lot of people here today. The whole venue is packed,” noted Bang Chan.
Hyunjin said, “It’s good to be here tonight. You guys are so hot.”
Felix said it’s “such an honor to perform in the Philippines for the first time. When we arrived here, just to see the fans cheering made us think we really have to earn the stage.”
Stray Kids started the show with “Hellevator” followed by “Grrr,” “Awaken” and “District 9.” Their repertoire included “Victory Song,” “Mirror,” “Insomnia,” “WHO?”, “Voices,” “My Pace,” “Grow Up,” “Awkward Silence,” “Get Cool,” “My Side,” “I Am You,” “Yayaya” and “Miroh,” the title track of their new album “Clé 1: Miroh” released last March this year. They also won their first ever TV music show trophy last April 4 on “M Countdown” through “Miroh.”
This is their first concert tour sinc debuting in March 2018 with the album “I Am Not.” The boys made outstanding achievements last year by bagging the rookie award at the Golden Disc Awards, Gaon Chart Music Awards, Asia Artist Awards, MBC Plus X Genie Music Awards, Mnet Asian Music Awards, Seoul Music Awards and Soribada Best K-Music Awards.
At the concert, the boys talked about performing in the Philippines, their music and the fans.
“Just one year ago, we were never able to imagine to be able to perform in a place like this in front of you, guys. You guys, yourselves, are already a touching moment for us,” said Han.
Bang Chan explained the meaning behind the track “Voices.”
“Wherever we are, we receive letters, we receive comments, we receive a lot of stuff from you, guys. Sometimes, you know, you write your feelings. A lot of times when you guys have a hard time. We all go through that, right? Whenever you’re having depression, when you feel lonely, when you have anxiety, social anxiety. When you guys are having a hard time, all these bad thoughts, all these bad voices in your head, we wanted to express that we are the same. It’s not just you guys but we go through that as well,” he said.
Pinoy Stays held fan projects during the concert to show their support for the boys. The projects, collectively called “Everlasting Stay,” were led by Stray Kids Philippines in cooperation with Stray Kids Global, Stray Kids Cloud 9 and Stray Kids Union.
They surprised Stray Kids with a video that showed how they love the boys by celebrating their anniversary and other occasions. They also held banners that read “Promise to stand by your side,” Galaxy Ocean event, sang “Happy Birthday” to Woojin and sang along with Stray Kids.
“You guys just touched my heart,” said Han after the fan video was shown while Bang Chan commented, “You guys made us really feel warm inside. We may not be crying but inside, our tears are filled with happiness so I just wanna say thank you again.”
Stray Kids thanked the fans for making the concert an unforgettable moment.
“While we were performing tonight, you guys were so beautiful. Thank you to you Stays who made this evening possible. Don’t go anywhere and always stay by our side, Stays. Promise?” said Lee Know.
Han said he “is really happy that we were able to perform in front of so many Stays. You guys are truly, truly the best. Masaya kami ngayong gabi.”
“Just the fact that we were able to perform with these awesome ‘hyungs’ in front of you Stays, I think I’m truly blessed. Thank you so, so much and I really love you guys. Stay, the best kayo!” said I.N.
Felix said “it’s so great to be standing on this stage with all of my members. Having stand on stage and seeing one person smile really lifts up all the struggle and all the stress that’s put on to us. Hindi namin makakalimutan ang gabing ito.”
Hyunjin told fans that “I really believe you are my happiness. No matter what hardships or concerns we have, the fact we were able to perform in front of you, I think that’s the happiest thing in my life. Ang ganda nyo.”
“It’s our first time to visit the Philippines as Stray Kids but I was really surprised about the big love from our Stay. Thank you for the big cheer,” said Seungmin, adding that he “got better” from his injury.
According to Changbin, “Even us Stray Kids, there are times when we get tired. So the fact that were able to perform in front of you, guys, so whenever those times come, no matter how many times, we were able to overcome and beat this. So I really wanna come back to see (you). I love you. Ingat!”
Woojin revealed he stayed in the Philippines when he was young to study English.
“I stayed in Iloilo for two months and studied English there. I really liked that I was able to study English and do duckpin (bowling) and (visited) Buto’t Balat restaurant. I had a really good time. It’s really Philippines that taught me English. And Boracay’s really the place I really like. I went to Boracay twice. It was really a beautiful place. So I think Philippines gave me the gift of happiness. Stay, mahalaga kayo,” he said.
Bang Chan commented that “yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery but today is a gift. Today, Stay, you guys are the biggest present for Stray Kids.”
Stray Kids’ concert was held just a week after a number of earthquakes rocked the country and Bang Chan choked back his feelings as he offered sympathy to those affected by the calamity.
“We were very saddened because it’s something, I guess, we don’t expect these kinds of thing. But for us, the first thing that came to our minds was the Philippine Stay. We want to send out our sincere condolences to all those who have been affected by these earthquakes, who have been hurt, who have been hurting or grieving,” he said.
He added, “No matter how, we will try our best to help out so we want you guys to have hope and also find hope for us so we are always with you guys, okay? Just like Stay stays with us, us Stray Kids will stay with you, guys. So don’t look at the past, be well today and look forward because time is ever going and won’t stop, okay? We will be with you, guys, forever. I love you, guys. Mami-miss ko kayo. We promise to come back and I hope you guys will be waiting.”
