I loved JM but now we’re not even friends —Barbie Imperial

Fans won’t be seeing former love team partners Barbie Imperial and JM de Guzman together in a project soon as they aren’t friends now.

This stemmed from JM’s interview on “Tonight With Boy Abunda,” where he said they only dated for a month.

“We dated but we’re not friends,” Barbie said in an interview at the press launch of Regal Entertainment’s newest movie “Finding You.”

Barbie and JM were cast on ABS-CBN’s “Araw Gabi,” where they became close. Barbie then was just being launched, while JM was making his comeback from hiatus.

Barbie added, “I just wish he didn’t say anything in his interview on ‘Tonight With Boy Abunda.’ So, that’s why I made that tweet the day after. If I do something, whether good or bad, I really admit it. It ended well. So, don’t say anything so we can be okay,” Barbie said, referring to her tweet that “once a liar, always a liar.”

JM admitted in the interview that he pursued her. However, Barbie felt hurt because she thought they were dating for more than a month.

“What hurt me was why he had to lie about us,” she charged. “We also had something we shared. I also don’t deny that I already talked about it too. I was just like, ‘Dude, why do you have to lie?’ You loved me too. I also won’t lie about him, I also loved him.”

As of this writing, JM has not publicly addressed Barbie’s sentiment.

But maybe JM apologized to her, we asked.

“Nothing. But I respect that. JM knows me. I don’t want to be rushed or surprised with ‘Forgive me.’ I want to forget things first before we talk,” she said.

JM said that things didn’t work out between them due to the pressures of work. Barbie thinks it was more than that but she did not elaborate.

Barbie later revealed she declined to do a movie with him after that because she wants them to settle their issue first.

“I told them (the producers) that it’s not yet the right time. I feel like we might just bother the people we work with if we’re not yet okay with each other. They may say it’s ‘just work’ but I don’t want to inconvenience anyone,” she said.

Big break
Amid the love life issues, Barbie feels blessed to be starring in “Finding You,” which she said is her first full movie. It also stars Jerome Ponce and Jane Oineza.

“This is the first movie that I have lines more than five words. Before, I would just walk in the background,” she said.

“I had a fun experience here and we (cast members) also hang out. I feel so blessed because I was just supposed to do a cameo role but the part of my character was fully expanded.

“I’m happy they liked my chemistry with Jerome. And Jane and I were so excited to work again together because we had just finished doing ‘Araw Gabi’ then…”

Barbie plays Grace, the ex-girlfriend of Jerome’s character.

“I’m his first heartbreak, I did something that really hurt him. So, that’s where his pain starts,” she said.
Can she relate to her role?

“No, because I’m a heartbreaker in this movie. In real life, I’m usually the one they break up with.

“I cannot hurt anyone. I would even chase someone just to ask for forgiveness. I’d rather be the one hurt.”

Talking about the movie, Barbie said only one person can make her find herself. She added that her character experienced heartbreak, not just romantically, but also by her dad.

“I know myself. I’m not afraid being alone. I’m not afraid of rejection. With my dad, I was so afraid to be rejected. Now, I try to be alone and I want to learn how it is being rejected so I can build myself. It’s not gonna be just one person who will be able to make me find myself. It can also be other people who walked into your life even if they would eventually leave.”

Directed by Easy Ferrer, “Finding You” opens in cinemas on May 29.
