South Korean couple Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo, best known for their drama Descendants of the Sun, are headed for a divorce.
South Korean entertainment website, All K-Pop, broke the news of the pair’s plan to end their marriage.
Song Joong-ki filed for divorce proceedings against the actress with the Seoul Family Court on June 26.
“First, I want to deliver my apologies to many of you who love and cherish me, for such unfortunate news. I have decided to move forward in a divorce with Song Hye Kyo,” Joong-ki said in a statement though his legal representative.
“Rather than lengthening the process by considering each other’s faults and deriding each other, I hope to complete the divorce amicably,” the actor added.
Joong-ki did not disclose details on why he decided to separate with Hye-kyo.
“I promise to overcome these damages and do my best as an actor in my production roles from now on,” he concluded.
The two, popularly known as the “Song Song” couple, married on October 31, 2017 at a lavish ceremony at The Shilla Hotel in Seoul.
The couple surprised colleagues and fans when they announced on July 5, 2017 that they were getting married. They became a couple after starring in the hit 2016 drama “Descendants of the Sun.”
Their wedding was attended by about 300 people. Song Hye-kyo wore a Christian Dior wedding gown and Song Joong-ki donned a tuxedo made by the same designer label.
