Veteran actor, director, and theater artist Antonio “Tony” Mabesa died on Friday, October 4. He was 84 years old.
“We, the family of Antonio Mabesa, are saddened to announce his passing. Sir Tony joined his creator at 10:20 this evening. He was surrounded by family and friends. Details of the wake will be announced tomorrow. We thank you for your prayers. We hope you can respect the family’s wish for privacy at this time,” according to a family statement shared by screenwriter Floy Quintos.
Details of his wake will be announced on Saturday, October 5.
Also known as the “Lion of the Theatre”, Mabesa was born January 27, 1935 in the province of Los Banos, Laguna where he studied BS Agriculture at the University of the Philippines-Los Banos in 1956 and finished his master’s degree in theatre arts at the University of California in Los Angeles in 1965, and his master’s degree in education at the University of Delaware in 1969.
He also established the Dulaang UP and the UP Playwrights Theater at the state university.
