When Miss Belgium steps into the limelight in this year’s Miss Universe beauty pageant on December 9 in Atlanta, Georgia in the United States, not a few would be pleasantly surprised to find out that the European nation’s official representative is actually a full-blooded Filipina.
Angel Flor Pua, who was born in Antwerp but traces her roots to Paco district in Manila, was actually Miss Belgium in 2018 and competed in the Miss World 2018 in China.
But the 24-year-old commercial pilot was recalled to duty to represent Belgium in the Miss Universe this year after the current Miss Belgium reportedly chose only to compete in the Miss World.
And since her designation as Belgium’s representative to the prestigious pageant, which incidentally has a Filipina as reigning Miss Universe in Catriona Gray, reportedly came at such short notice, Angel lacked the total support she would need to compete in Atlanta.
This was why Filipinos in neighboring Luxembourg readily came to her aid.
Accompanied by her parents Florentino Pua Jr. and Adela Sarmiento, the Pua family sold – what else – Belgian waffle at a general assembly last November 10 of the Samahan ng mga Pilipino Luxembourg to raise more funds to bolster Angel’s coffers for the Atlanta pageant.
“Ubos, walang natira sa Belgian waffles,” Filipino Facebook user Gody De Guzman Manalo shared as he underscored the kind of support the Puas got from the Filipinos living and working in Luxembourg.
“The event was a resounding success because of the full support of all the members. The generosity of everyone turned the buffet table into a feast with so many food to eat and unlimited drinks for everyone,” De Guzman posted.
Pua will be competing with Miss Philippines Gazini Ganados in the 2019 Miss Universe.
