PH bet takes 2019 Miss Universe prelims by storm

Pageant fans cheered as Miss Universe Philippines Gazini Ganados rocked the preliminary competitions for the 68th Miss Universe pageant held in Atlanta, Georgia last Friday night.

In elaborate Cary Santiago creations, Gazini slayed the runway in her golden phoenix inspired evening gown.

Then Gazini wowed pageant fans when she wore the silver national costume inspired by the Philippine eagle.

The preliminary competition will select the 19 semi-finalists for 2019 Miss Universe. One semi-finalist will come from global fan voting. The 20 semi-finalists will be announced during the finals on Monday, December 9.

Santiago said that he was dedicating the national costume and evening gown of Gazini to all the pageant fans.

“I created a national costume that is somehow worthy for an international event. I took my inspiration from our national bird. The design is not as flamboyant but the details are very intricate. Its hand-stitched all coming from the same fabric with my signature laser cut patterns,” Santiago said.

“For the evening gowns, I made several for her but we are down to two that will be used both for prelims and for pageant night. It is fabric manipulation sans the glitter. The silhouette showcases her figure which makes it even more beautiful,” he added.

Santiago said that Gazini has been his model since 2014 and “she is the nicest.”

“I can’t also say no to her mentor Jonas Borces. All these are labor of love. It’s sad to note that in our country, we don’t really have the support of the government or any agency that will help us fund and produce beautiful pieces for our Philippine representative/s. But i assure everyone that i did try my best in designing and creating masterpieces for Gazini,” the popular Cebuano designer said.

Santiago praised the pageant fans “who are the reason why the Philippines continues to blaze the trail in an industry that celebrates beauty both inside and out.”

Filipino pageant expert Jonas Gaffud said that he was impressed by the preliminary performances of some Asian candidates in this year’s Miss Universe contest.

“So proud of the Asian delegates at this year’s Miss Universe. Vietnam is wow! Of course Gazini slayed the runway and so beautiful! Singapore’s Mohana was a queen in the evening gown. I love Albania and India. But we have to remember, the preliminary interview is the most crucial for me,” Gaffud said.
