Julia Barretto is happy for her former real and reel partner Joshua Garcia now in a successful love team with Janella Salvador.
“Up to this day, watching him from afar… As I always tell him, ‘I’ll always be one of your cheerleaders.’ Wherever he is in his career now, I’m really proud of him, because I’ve seen his growth, and I was there in the beginning of that all,” she said at the media launch of the upcoming iWant thriller series “I AM U.”
Julia also has good words for Janella, whom she considers a close friend.
“Dati kasi, palagi namin pinag-uusapan ’yung mga pangarap naming dalawa, ’yung mga gusto naming maabot, gusto naming ma-experience, ’yung mga paths na gusto namin mapuntahan,” Julia said. “Ngayon, just watching her, being able to do these things, proud ako sa kanya, and pinag-pe-pray ko rin siya.”
Even though she’s paired with Tony Labrusca on “I AM U,” the 22-year-old actress doesn’t see herself being part of a new love team. Saying that she’s already “graduated” from having one, Julia enjoys being “free” to widen her career choices.
“At this point, feeling ko I’m just very, very grateful that I’ve been trusted with projects that are not the usual that I’ve done before,” she said.
“I’m glad na nakakapaglaro na ako. That I’m free to do some scenes and some roles and take more risks. That I can now take on roles fearlessly. That now I can be the actress that I’ve always wanted to be.”
Prior to having a “new chapter” as actress, Julia’s tandem with Joshua produced a teleserye and five films.
Referring to that partnership with Joshua, she added: “Siguro, graduate na ako sa kung saan ako nanggaling. Graduate na ako sa pagiging permanent in a love team. I’ve been blessed to have experienced that, don’t get me wrong, but I’ve already graduated from that phase in my career.”
“I’m very happy to be in the phase in my career na mas mature na ’yung mga nagagawa ko, mas marami na akong nakakatrabaho. Mas free na ako sa pagpili ng projects. Hindi na ako parang na sa isang box. I can now explore as an actress different genres, and be able to work with different leading men, and different kind of materials, and different directors.”
On “I AM U,” Julia finds her character tormented by one unfortunate event after she crosses path with a doppelganger. It’s a dual role for her as Elise, who has the best of everything in life; and Rose, who has close to nothing.
Produced by Dreamscape Entertainment in partnership with The IdeaFirst Company, the other cast members are Ina Raymundo, Richard Quan, Cedrick Juan, Kokoy de Santos, Adrianna So, Claire Ruiz, Lander Vera Perez, Yayo Aguila, and Jenny Miller.
“I AM U” starts streaming on Feb. 26.
